How to look after your scissors

Simple habits that help your scissors last.

Good scissors last longer when you look after them. These simple habits take only a minute.

Clean and dry after use

Wipe the blades with a soft, dry cloth after each client to remove hair, product and moisture. Do not leave scissors damp or in a wet area.

Keep them in the pouch

Every Splendid Beauty scissor and set comes with a leather pouch. Put your scissors back in it when you are not using them, so the blades do not knock against other tools.

Use them only for hair

Cutting paper, plastic, wire or anything other than hair can damage the edge. Keep a separate pair for other jobs.

Handle with care

Do not drop your scissors, and do not leave them open on the edge of a station. A drop can knock the blades out of line.

Check the tension

If the blades feel loose or stiff, adjust the tension screw a little at a time until they close smoothly. See How to choose barber scissors for more about tension.

Oil the pivot

Put a drop of scissor oil on the pivot area now and then, open and close the blades a few times, then wipe away the extra oil.

Sharpening

When the scissors stop cutting cleanly, have them sharpened by a professional scissor sharpener rather than doing it yourself.
